    NO PAIN ….. NO GAIN

Whether it is learning to sing, being competitive at a sport, learning to dance

    or even becoming a successful

entrepreneur, we have all, at some point,

pursued a goal where we knew we

would need to learn new tools and skills.

While we might possess the qualities that

could give us an edge to excel at that new

skill, we need time, perseverance, and practice to follow the instructions. Nevertheless, we focus and set our minds to reach that goal. We follow the steps to success.

Most of us have either reached that desired goal or, if not, can honestly admit that we didn’t succeed because we didn’t follow through with the stipulated program set by our coach, teacher, or instructor.

So, why do we think we can do it on our own and without any training when it comes to skills necessary to be happier, more self-loving, or to achieve a higher level of wellness?

Let’s get some context. Today’s world appears to have faulty thinking at its foundation, which implies that our ideas are the core of our wisdom. We do not question the veracity of an idea when we feel it is part of who we are. That spontaneous reaction, that “natural” way of being, gives us an undeniable certainty that our ideas are the bedrock of our wisdom.

Where did we get those ideas? Are they really OUR ideas?

Perhaps these are ideas that we learned from our parents at an early age, and we have adopted them as our own.

·Perhaps they are concepts we absorbed from a teacher or a friend in school or at work and assumed as our own.

Do we ever question how that idea assimilates into our being and why it dictates our decision-making and, ultimately, our lives?

Most likely, some of those ideas and concepts benefit us, but some might be harmful. For starters, if we are in pain, we must admit something is wrong and be determined to change it. Using insight and reflection, we can identify both the beneficial and the harmful ideas that have been forming the basis of our lives to date and that are now causing us pain.

Once pinpointed, if these ideas are beneficial, we can keep them; if not, we should change them. Ideas and concepts are not set in our DNA—they can be changed.

Just like learning to golf, sing, or dance, with the help and guidance of a trained philosophical coach, we can use tools and learn to polish skills, thus developing ideas and access to a higher state of wellness.

This will make us happier, more balanced, more forgiving, and understanding—a better version of ourselves.
